If I had to classify this novel by just reading it at first I would say it was historical non fiction because o'brian gave accurate stories and details of the Vietnam war and how men were feeling during this. Though after finding out that the events weren't actually real I would classify this piece as historical fiction because these were just researched stories. They accurately described the conditions and locating butthe content of the stories were false and simply just creative war stories.
