At first this story may seem like its about Mary Anne Bell and her drastic changes, though in reality it is a story about the loss of innocence. And that is the on going theme, making a connection between Mary Anne leaving behind her innocence as a sweet American cookie cutter image of perfection and progressing into something more rabid as the war goes on. Mary Anne’s story is intended to symbolize that the world of love and happiness the men of Alpha Company once obtained, filled with memories and picture would soon fade in a time of war, into the forms of violence, murder, and darkness. The innocent people they once were would never be seen again thanks to the war, just as in the case of Mary Anne.
